GCC Patent Office

Filing Patent Application:

  1. A power of attorney signed by the applicant and duly legalized up to a Consulate of any GCC member state.

  2. A certified copy of the certificate of incorporation and/or an extract from the Commercial Register of the applicant company duly notarized and legalized as above.

  3. A legalized deed of assignment signed by the inventors assigning the patent right to the applicant if the applicant is not the inventor.

  4. A priority document if the priority is claimed.

  5. Two copies of the specification and claims in English and Arabic prepared strictly in the following order :

    • Title of invention.

    • Field of invention.

    • Prior art of the invention.

    • Disclosure of the invention.

    • Brief description of the drawings.

    • Brief description of the invention.

    • Claims.

    • Drawings if any.

    • Summary of the invention.

    • Abstract of the invention.



  • Is there a novelty requirement?
    - Absolute worldwide novelty is required.

  • Can a patent application be filed without its complete documents?
    - Yes, but the remaining documents should be filed strictly within 90 days, (non-extendable).

  • Can convention priority be claimed?
    - Yes.

  • Can a registration be obtained for pharmaceutical products?
    - Yes.

  • Can a patent search be conducted?
    - No.

  • What is the term of protection of a patent and from which date is it calculated?
    - 20 years from the date of filing.

  • Can the specifications or claims be amended?
    - Yes.

  • Could annuity payments be made before the granting of the patent?
    - Yes. It must be paid within January 1st to March 31st of each year starting from the first year followed the filing date.

  • Does the Patents Office publish the patent applications in the Official Gazette?
    - No, only the decision to grant it will be published.
